How often should you clean an air purifier?
Brian's schedule is monthly. Manufacturers suggest the pre-filter more often: Coway every two weeks, Levoit every one to three weeks and Blueair every two to four weeks. Main HEPA filters are replaced, typically every 6 to 12 months depending on the model.
How do you clean it?
- Turn it off and unplug it.
- Remove the pre-filter and vacuum it gently with a brush attachment, or wash it only if the manual says it is washable.
- Let a washed pre-filter dry completely before reinstalling it.
- Never wash or rinse a true HEPA filter. Replace it on schedule or when the indicator says so.
Where should it sit?
Keep air cleaners away from curtains and anything that blocks airflow, and avoid models that intentionally produce ozone.
Safety notes
- Unplug before opening it, keep moisture away from the electronics, and do not spray water on the unit.
Seattle-area notes
After use during heavy wildfire smoke, filters may need replacing before the indicator light comes on, according to the Washington Department of Health. Vacuuming a carbon filter does not restore its ability to filter gases.
