How often should you clean a dishwasher?
Brian's schedule is at least once a year, and monthly is best. Whirlpool recommends cleaning about every 30 days, and Bosch recommends cleaning the filter every few months. Check your model's manual.
How do you deep clean it?
- Remove the bottom rack, twist out the filter and wash it with warm soapy water and a scrub brush.
- Wipe the door seals with a soft cloth or sponge and warm water.
- Run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner, following its package, or with 2 cups of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe cup on the bottom rack and no detergent. Whirlpool cautions that vinegar is an acid, so save it for an occasional deep clean.
- If the spray arm jets are clogged, clear them with a gentle poke from a paper clip or tweezers.
Safety notes
- Vinegar is an acid; Whirlpool warns that using it too often can damage a dishwasher.
- Skip wire brushes, scouring pads and harsh cleaners, and never run the dishwasher without its filters installed.
